What is a Cervical Biopsy?

A cervical biopsy is a medical procedure in which a small sample of tissue is taken from the cervix (the lower part of the uterus) for further examination under a microscope. It is typically performed if there are abnormal Pap smear results, suspicious lesions, or concerns about cervical health. Cervical biopsies are instrumental in diagnosing various conditions, including cervical dysplasia, human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, and cervical cancer.

What types of Cervical Biopsies are there?

1. Colposcopic Biopsy: A colposcope, a specialized magnifying instrument, is used to closely examine the cervix. If abnormal areas are identified, a small tissue sample is taken for biopsy.

2. Endocervical Curettage (ECC): A narrow instrument called a curette is gently inserted into the endocervical canal to collect cells for examination. ECC helps in detecting abnormalities in the cervical canal.

What to Expect During the Procedure?

2. During the Biopsy: You will be asked to lie on an examination table with your feet in stirrups, similar to a pelvic exam. The colposcope is used to visualize the cervix, and the biopsy sample is taken using a small instrument.

3. Post-Procedure: Mild discomfort or light bleeding is common after the biopsy. Avoiding strenuous activities and sexual intercourse for a few days is usually recommended.
